Following the announcement of the St George's Day Game at Twickenham on Saturday 24th April, KO 5.30pm, where London Wasps face Bath Rugby in their Round 21 Guinness Premiership in support of Help for Heroes, the Club have continued with their desire to invest in armed forces charities.
This week both Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, with whom the club share their Adams Park Stadium, became one of the first clubs to sign up for Ticket for Troops, a new initiative which offers the armed forces free tickets to big events including football and rugby matches and top music acts.
Thousands of tickets will be made available to all serving military personnel and to veterans who have been discharged through injury since 2001, at the new Tickets for Troops website. Match of the Day presenter and former England player Gary Lineker and Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry joined David Cameron at the Tickets for Troops launch at the 02 Arena.
Tickets for Troops has been set up as an independent not for profit company that will help give something back to our troops. It has received huge support from the sports and entertainment worlds with tickets donated for top rugby, football and cricket matches, athletics meetings, boxing contests, snooker, horse-racing events, theatre, and both classic and rock music concerts around the country.
These tickets will be made available exclusively to eligible personnel at www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk, which has teamed up with top ticket distributor www.seetickets.com. A donation of £1 will be requested for every ticket, which will be distributed across service charities.
Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry, awarded the VC for his courageous acts in Iraq, said on the launch of this scheme, "This is a fantastic idea and it is heartening and uplifting for any serving soldier or ex soldier to know that people really appreciate the work they do and this is a brilliant way of demonstrating respect for our Armed Forces."
David Cameron said: "Ticket for Troops is all about people coming together to say to the armed forces: thank you, we respect you and we recognise the sacrifice you are making for us. I'm proud of the part the Conservative Party has played in getting this off the ground and want to thank everyone for generously lending their time and support to this great cause."
Former England and Wasps legend and now Board Director, Lawrence Dallaglio, has also been named as a Patron of the Tickets for Troops scheme and has this month furthered his and the Club's involvement with armed forces charitable organisations, electing STUBS, a new non-political charitable initiative to aimed to show care, support and respect for our armed services as an official benefactor of the Dallaglio Foundation - the Official Charity of London Wasps.
STUBS currently host injured servicemen and women from Headley Court at London Wasps home games, distributing match tickets to service veterans who would not otherwise be able to attend the event.
On the Club's involvement with both Tickets for Troops and STUBS, London Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers Club Owner, Steve Hayes, said: "This is a fantastic way of recognising the extraordinary courage and dedication that our young men and women show every day of their lives. We are proud and honoured to support them in this way."
