Newcastle Falcons have paid tribute to departing director of rugby, Rob Andrew, as he leaves Kingston Park to take up a role at the Rugby Football Union.

In more than a decade at the helm Andrew has established the professional game in the north-east of England, steering the club from the second tier of English rugby to Premiership and Cup glory, as well as the last eight in Europe.

His 326 competitive games in charge remains a record in the professional era, with chairman Dave Thompson saying: "Rob's contribution to the Falcons and north-east rugby as a whole has been immense, and he goes to the RFU with our sincere thanks and best wishes.

"His hard work has established professional club rugby in an area where football was previously the be-all and end-all, and we would not be where we are today without his enormous effort.

"I'm sure all Falcons supporters will join me in thanking Rob for his exceptional service to this club, and we look forward to working with him in his new capacity."

Andrew said upon taking up his new position: "I'd firstly like to thank Newcastle Falcons for giving me eleven very memorable years of club rugby.

"We achieved a lot during my time at the club, developed a lot of exciting players and the support I had from the board, players and supporters was invaluable throughout my time here. I'd like to wish Newcastle Falcons all the best for the forthcoming season in the Guinness Premiership.

"Moving away from Newcastle Falcons has of course been a difficult decision for me to make but the challenge offered by the Elite Rugby Director role was one I couldn't turn down.

"The time I've spent in professional Premiership club rugby has been invaluable and I want to work closely with the club owners and the Directors of Rugby so that we can reach agreements, which will mutually benefit both parties and take international and club rugby in this country to another level."
