Quins excited by physicality of Irish match

London Irish forwards coach Tony Booth believes his side's hard-fought 13-6 win over play-off chasing Harlequins was the perfect preparation for next week's Heineken Cup semi-final against Toulouse.
Irish had to work hard for the points, which keep them in the hunt for a top-six finish and European qualification via the league as Topsy Ojo's second-half try eventually broke down a resilient Quins defence - who slipped to third in the GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP.

And Booth insists Brian Smith's side are now ready to take on the French heavyweights at Twickenham next weekend after a dominant display against one of the GUINESS PREMIERSHIP form teams.

"We wanted it to be a physical game," said Booth.

"Quins play with a lot of physicality at the breakdown and that has given us all our contact skills for the Heineken Cup semi-final.

"The hangover from Perpignan was evident last week and we have got on the front foot and said to the players 'if you want to replicate our run in the Heineken Cup next year we've got to qualify for Europe in the league' and that's what was driving us.

"In the first half we must have had 75% of the possession and played with a lot of width and we were confident it would take its toll on Quins in the latter stages."

The hosts dominated the first period but went in to the break three points down as Adrian Jarvis' 35th minute penalty was the only score of the half.

Irish finally broke through in the 66th minute with substitute Eoghan Hickey levelling proceedings with a penalty before adding a second minutes later.

Irish sealed the points in the 76th minute as Seilala Mapusua spilt Quins open and floated a long pass out to Ojo who beat the defence to the corner to touch down - with Hickey converting the tough conversion from the touchline.

Home captain Bob Casey was sin-binned from the resulting kick off for deliberately obstructing the Quins attack and Jarvis kicked the consolation penalty for to ensure the visitors picked up what could be a crucial bonus point.

"It would have been harsh if we didn't get anything out of the game but I think London Irish deserved to win on the day," said Quins director of rugby Dean Richards.

"When you concede as much first phase possession as we did, which was the most we've conceded all season you are going to stand very little chance of winning.

"I thought there were some good things that came out of the game.

The defence was massive from the guys and the enthusiasm from all the players was superb.

"You can't always play from the wrong areas of the field and you can't play without the ball."
