How became a referee: 17 years old, not allowed to play on Saturday due to school trials and talked into refereeing Cheltenham Saracens 3rd XV while in the pub on a Friday night. I loved the game and my father had gently explained the laws over the years.

Playing career: I played as a centre for Cheltenham Grammar, Cheltenham Saracens, Cheltenham RFC and at Swansea University. I also played County Schools U16 and U18 for Gloucestershire.

Refereeing career: 39 international tests as referee. 48 tests as a touch judge. More than 40 Heineken Cup matches, including 3 finals and 3 semi-finals. 2 Premiership finals. 1 Tetley Cup final. Refereed 1st Courage League / Premiership game in October 1994.

First ever match as a referee: Cheltenham Saracens 3rd XV

First test match: Georgia v Russia, 1998

Career highlights: First Six Nations match - Wales v France, 2000. Grand Slam match - Wales v Ireland, 2005. Heineken Cup Final - Munster v Biarittz, 2006. RWC semi-final (New Zealand v Australia) and 3rd v 4th (New Zealand v France), 2003. Selection for RWC 2007.

How became a referee: Worked abroad in previous job so could not train with club. New coach dropped me from 1st XV and didn’t enjoy 2nd or 3rd ream rugby. Kids needed referee for Sunday morning - did that and never looked back.

How became a referee: Went along to a refereeing meeting and got told I was refereeing Bream 3rds v Berry Hill Wappers on the Saturday.

Playing career: Junior rugby with Bream RFC in the Forest Of Dean. University of East Anglia whilst studying there.

Refereeing career: Began at 15. Joined National Panel at 21. Joined Elite Referee Unit at 23. First Premiership match in October 2003.
Became full time referee in 2005. Refereed 6 internationals.

First ever match as a referee: Bream 3rds v Berry Hill Wappers, 1995

First test match: Italy v France in the RBS 6 Nations, February 2007

Career highlights: Bath v Rotherham, my first Premiership match. Army v Navy. Varsity match. Semi-final RWC 7s in Hong Kong between New Zealand and Australia. Fiji v Samoa. France v Italy. Referee selection for RWC 2007.

Year began refereeing: 1993

How became a referee: Did bits of refereeing at school and university in between injuries. Finally stopped playing after a neck injury and joined the Leicestershire Society whilst at Loughborough University.

Playing career: Short! I played for Staffordshire and the Midlands as a loose-head prop and was selected for the England U16 group training week.

Refereeing career: I took up refereeing after a succession of injuries. I started refereeing seriously during my studies at Loughborough and more seriously still when I left university and could afford a car! After gaining a place on the RFU National Panel of Referees in 2000, I was accepted into the Elite Referee Unit in December 2002. In April 2006, I gained a place on the iRB Touch Judge/TMO panel.

First ever match as a referee: King Edward VI High School 1st XV vs Friary Grange 1st XV, September 1992

Career highlights: Refereeing at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 2006, the U21 RWC final in 2003 and Canada v USA in Churchill Cup 2005 are my favourite refereeing experiences, closely followed by the Dubai and Hong Kong Sevens.

Year began refereeing: 1999

How became a referee: By being challenged by the then Head of Refereeing to take my playing/coaching experience and apply it to refereeing and see if I could reach the Premiership. I did in three years!

Playing career: Began at Handsworth RFC in Birmingham, and then played for Moseley, Wolverhampton and Walsall as a fly half and centre. Also played county rugby for North Midlands and Staffordshire.

Refereeing career: Began in September 1999 at a preseason tournament in Southam, Warwickshire. Ended my first season on the Midland Group and in my second season I was elected to the National Panel of Referees, making the ERU in December 2001. I have refereed in the Premiership since October 2003.

First ever match as a referee: Claverdon II v Ford Leamington I, 1999

Career highlights: Refereeing in Europe – junior internationals in Italy, France, Scotland and Wales. Traveling to Chile as part of England Counties Team. Refereeing in Argentina, South Africa and USA. Refereeing 2006 Varsity match.

How became a referee: I was injured and had to have an operation which prevented me from playing for a year. Whilst at the club one Saturday “recovering”, the referee did not turn up for one of the lower team games and I was asked to referee.

Playing career: Played for Westcombe Park from age 14, moving on to play for the first XV before injury.

Refereeing career: Started refereeing with London Society, moved through their ranks with exchanges to Holland, France and New Zealand. Joined PNR in 1995. Refereed in Premiership since 2001, and referee in European Cup. Touch Judge and TMO in Tri-Nations, New Zealand 2003, South Africa 2004, South Africa 2005. Six Nations 2004, 2005 and 2006.

First ever match as a referee: Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) v New Ash Green, 1990

How became a referee: Injury forced me to stop playing and refereeing was initially an interim thing before I started playing again but I enjoyed it so much that I carried on.

Playing career: Played in the back row for Hull and East Riding RUFC and then Hull RUFC without ever reaching any dizzy heights.
Refereeing career: Joined local society in East Yorkshire in September 1994 and worked way up the ladder before becoming a member of the National Panel of Referees in 2000. Have spent the last four seasons refereeing in National League 1, as well as enjoying the opportunity to referee around Europe and also in South Africa on an RFU exchange visit. Appointed to the ERU in June 2006 and have since broadened my experience with trips to Russia and Singapore amongst other places.

First ever match as a referee: Hornsea 3rds v Scunthorpe 5ths, September 1994

Career highlights: Refereeing the final of the Powergen National Trophy at Twickenham in 2006. Also enjoying my first international match between Holland and Botswana in November 2005. Foreign trips to South Africa and Russia stand out as highlights.

How became a referee: Went on a gap year to Perth, Australia, and started refereeing school games whilst out there. Continued to referee when I went to university and then started doing it properly in 2000.

Refereeing career: Got onto the National Panel in 2002 and was promoted onto the ERU in June 2008. 2008/9 - refereed two games in the Guinness Premiership, 3 European Challenge Cup games. Was also appointed to the Churchill Cup in June to referee Canada v Georgia and USA v Georgia.

First ever match as a referee: Coventry Welsh 2nd XV against Old Wheatlians 3rd XV - March 2000
