Saracens were yesterday evening (Wednesday 29th April) voted Community Club of the Year in the annual Parliamentary Rugby Union Citizenship Awards.
Saracens pipped Northampton Saints and Worcester Warriors to the top award because they were able to show significant improvements on their existing outstanding programmes in the last 12 months.
"The Saracens Foundation has established a consistently high level of delivery with public and private sector partners over the years, but showed that they have not rested on their laurels, but instead demonstrated growth of 35% in delivery levels, as well as increases in staffing and investment of similar magnitude", said Derek Wyatt MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby Union Group and Chairman of the judging panel.
Mark McCafferty, Chief Executive of Premier Rugby, said, "We saw three presentations of the very highest quality today and it was Saracens who ultimately came out on top. They were able to demonstrate continued growth, but not at the expense of the quality or vision of the Foundation. To the judges that proved their commitment to the values that have made them such a success in both public and private sector delivery."
Talking about Northampton Saints, who were highly commended, Miriam Sherlock, Editor of SportBusiness said, "I was struck by how with such a small team they still deliver such a large number of projects of real depth. They have stayed true to their philosophy of 'bums on seats' and the financial returns they make are not dissimilar to those of clubs with much larger teams. That is testimony to their commitment, enthusiasm and passion."
Paul Farrelly, Secretary of the Rugby Union Group said of Worcester Warriors, "Worcester mage a huge impression on the panel with the depth and sophistication of their work, which has improved markedly in such a short time. What was very clear is the vision at the heart of the club and the phrase, 'not a community team, but a community club' really struck home."
Andy Reed MP, who has been a judge for all four years of its existence said: "The sophistication and breadth of the projects being undertaken at the Guinness Premiership clubs is fantastic. There are a clutch of clubs who have shown they are excellent delivery partners for private and public sector organisations."
At an evening reception in the House of Commons, three additional awards were also re-presented.
Bristol Rugby were presented with the Innovation Award for their 'Bright Sparks' scheme, whilst Worcester Warriors received the Impact Award for their 'npower Tag' programme.
Miriam Sherlock, Editor of SportBusiness magazine, presented Saracens with the SportBusiness CSR Award for their rapidly growing dance programme.
The panel consisted of Derek Wyatt, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey (Chair), Paul Farrelly, MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, Mark McCafferty, Chief Executive of Premier Rugby, Andy Reed, MP for Loughborough and Miriam Sherlock, Editor of SportBusiness magazine.
